The James Wilson Bridges Medical Society addresses the obesity epidemic

The James Wilson Bridges Medical Society (JWBMS), an organization of  local physicians who share the mission of the National Medical Association, the 117 year old association of African American physicians, launched the second part of its two pronged efforts to address the obesity epidemic in communities such as Miami Gardens and Overtown.  The new  Health and Nutrition Program raises awareness of the dangers of obesity, importance of physical activity and proper nutrition. ”The alarming rate of obesity in our children compels us to act now.  We must help to prevent the next generation from suffering and succumbing too soon from diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and other obesity related illnesses,” said Dr. Cheryl Holder, President of JWBMS.

It’s estimated that about 2/3 of American adults are overweight or obese in Florida. In the African American community these statistics are even more alarming. The JWBMS has a mission to advance the art and science of medicine for people of African descent through education, advocacy, and health policy. The Health and Nutrition Program made possible with the $5000 award received from Allegany Franciscan Ministries  helped JWBMS members  and local medical students provide monthly presentations to Miami Gardens’ children ages 5-17.  They were exposed to books like “Pumpkin Soup is for Sunday”, which teaches about vegetables, to basic science experiments and to mentoring physicians.

The first part of the JWBMS program is the 7th annual “Dr. Nelson Adams’ Walk A Mile With A Child” in Overtown. Held every second Saturday in May, the one mile walk allows adults to lead by example by walking to raise awareness and funds.  Together, “The Walk” and the Health and Nutrition Programs help our community gain a better understanding of how to fight obesity and to  protect and improve their health.
